From a Musician’s Search for the Right Sound to a Workshop in Taiwan
Founded in Taiwan in 1997, Lien Violins grew from David Lien’s lifelong relationship with the violin and his belief that a meaningful instrument should help musicians express their own voice.
Today, Lien Violins brings together musical experience, workshop craftsmanship, instrument development and international partnerships—continuing a journey that began with one violin and a deep curiosity about sound.
A Musician’s Beginning
David Lien grew up in a musical family and began playing the violin at an early age. The instrument his parents worked hard to provide became his companion throughout his musical education and later accompanied him to Vienna.
After studying music at the National Taiwan University of Arts, David joined the Taipei Symphony Orchestra. In 1986, he continued his musical studies in Vienna, where his understanding of the violin began to develop in a new direction.
Discovering Violin Making in Vienna
In Vienna, David was introduced to violin making through the father of a fellow musician—a local luthier and musical instrument collector.
Their conversations often explored instrument construction, craftsmanship and the meaning of the “right” sound. These experiences encouraged David to look beyond performance and consider how an instrument’s materials, construction and setup shape the way a musician can respond and express.
He gradually came to believe that the musical value of an instrument is not determined by price alone. Careful craftsmanship, thoughtful adjustment and an understanding of the player are equally important.
Founding Lien Violins in Taiwan
After returning to Taiwan, David founded Lien Violins in 1997.
His goal was not simply to supply instruments, but to develop instruments that musicians could trust—responsive, balanced and carefully adjusted for the needs of different players.
This philosophy later became the foundation of the David Lien Taiwan Workshop Series and the Lien Violins Professional Series.
From Taiwan to the International Stage
Our exhibition records date back to 2004, when Lien Violins presented its instruments at Musikmesse Frankfurt. In the years that followed, the company participated in international exhibitions including the NAMM Show in Anaheim, Music China in Shanghai and Mondomusica in Cremona.
The instrument’s balance, richness, sweetness and projection left a lasting impression. Rather than becoming a standard to imitate, the experience gave David a clearer tonal direction—one that continues to influence the development and adjustment of Lien Violins instruments today.
Responsibility Behind Every Label
For David, the label inside an instrument represents more than its origin. It represents responsibility to the musician who will play it.
Each instrument should offer more than attractive materials or appearance. It should provide a reliable response, a balanced voice and room for the player to develop a personal musical identity.

Today, Lien Violins combines workshop-made instruments, professional instrument series, setup and restoration services, fine instrument consultation and international distribution.
From Taiwan, our instruments and services have reached musicians, educators and partners across Europe, North America, Asia and other international markets.
